Business credit is a credit file that belongs to your company, not to you personally. Build it correctly and your business can qualify for vendor terms, store and fleet accounts, and eventually revolving credit on its own EIN — so a single slow month in your personal life doesn’t put your operating cash at risk. This guide walks through what business credit actually is, how it’s scored, and the exact order to build it in, without the hype.
What business credit actually is
Just as Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion track you as a consumer, three main agencies track your business:
- Dun & Bradstreet — issues your D-U-N-S Number and calculates the PAYDEX score (0–100). A PAYDEX of 80 means you pay on the due date; scores above 80 mean you pay early.
- Experian Business — produces the Intelliscore Plus (1–100) and a business credit report.
- Equifax Business — tracks a business credit risk and failure score.
These files are built from tradelines — accounts with vendors, suppliers, and lenders who report how you pay. Unlike personal credit, a business file is not created automatically. Nothing shows up until you open accounts with companies that actually report, and pay them on time.
Business credit vs. personal credit
- Tied to: your EIN and business entity — not your Social Security number.
- Scored on: payment timeliness (often day-for-day), company size, and industry risk — not utilization ratios the way consumer FICO is.
- Public: business reports can be pulled by vendors and partners; consumer reports are private.
- Personal guarantee: early on, most real financing still asks you to personally guarantee the debt. Separation is something you earn as the file matures — it is not automatic on day one. Be skeptical of anyone promising “no-PG funding” to a brand-new entity.
Step 1 — Set up a fundable foundation
Lenders and bureaus check that your business looks like a real, findable company. Before you apply for anything, put these in place and keep every detail identical everywhere they appear:
- Register an LLC or corporation (a separate legal entity, not a sole proprietorship, is what separates the credit).
- Get a free EIN from the IRS.
- Open a dedicated business bank account and run all revenue and expenses through it.
- Set up a business phone number, a professional email on your own domain, and a consistent business address.
- Get any licenses or permits your industry and city require.
Inconsistent name, address, or phone details across your bank, your state registration, and the bureaus are one of the most common reasons a file stalls. Lock them down first.
Step 2 — Get your D-U-N-S Number
Request a D-U-N-S Number directly from Dun & Bradstreet (it is free; you never need to pay a third party for it). This is what lets a PAYDEX score exist once you have reporting tradelines. Without it, Tier 1 vendors have nowhere to report.
Step 3 — Build tradelines in tiers
Business credit is built roughly in three tiers. Move up only after the tier below is reporting.
Tier 1 — Net-30 vendor accounts
Open accounts with suppliers that extend Net-30 terms (you buy now, pay in 30 days) and, importantly, report to the business bureaus. Common starting vendors include Uline, Grainger, and Quill — but always confirm a vendor reports before relying on it, because not all do. Aim for three to five reporting tradelines, and pay each invoice early. Early payment is what pushes a PAYDEX above 80.
Tier 2 — Store and fleet accounts
Once a few Tier 1 accounts are reporting, add retail store cards and fuel/fleet cards that report to business bureaus. These usually carry higher limits than vendor terms.
Tier 3 — Cash and revolving credit
With an established history, your business can pursue revolving business credit cards and bank lines of credit. This is the tier where a strong file can start reducing how much you personally guarantee.
How long does it take?
Realistically, expect three to six months to get your first Tier 1 tradelines established and reporting, and longer to reach Tier 3. Payment history has to accumulate; there is no legitimate way to fast-forward it. Anyone selling “instant business credit” is selling shortcuts that tend to collapse under a lender’s review.
Common mistakes that keep businesses stuck
- Mixing personal and business spending. It muddies your records and undercuts the separation you’re trying to build.
- Opening non-reporting accounts. A vendor that doesn’t report the payment does nothing for your file.
- Paying on the due date instead of early. On PAYDEX, early payment is what earns the higher scores.
- Applying for Tier 3 credit too soon. Denials and hard pulls pile up before your file can support the request.
- Ignoring your personal credit. Because of personal guarantees, your personal profile still matters while the business file is young — the two work together.
Where personal credit repair fits in
Since early business financing usually rests on a personal guarantee, damaged or inaccurate items on your consumer report can quietly cap what your business can borrow. If your personal reports contain errors, addressing them is often a prerequisite to building business credit — not a separate project. That is the work we do at Online Credit Repair: reviewing your consumer reports and disputing inaccurate items with the bureaus under the FCRA. If your business is ready to build its own file, our business credit service maps out the D-U-N-S, tradeline, and tier plan for you.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an LLC to build business credit?
A separate legal entity — an LLC or corporation — is what lets credit attach to the business rather than to you personally. A sole proprietorship generally reports back to your Social Security number, so the separation you want doesn’t really happen.
Can I build business credit with bad personal credit?
You can start the foundation and Tier 1 vendor accounts, since many vendors don’t check personal credit. But because higher-tier financing usually requires a personal guarantee, weak personal credit will limit you until it’s addressed.
Is a D-U-N-S Number free?
Yes. You can request it directly from Dun & Bradstreet at no cost. You never need to pay a third-party service to obtain one.
